Studies of patients given supplemental AKG following surgery found a nitrogen-sparing effect and a reduction in loss of lean body mass. AKG helps reduce ammonia levels that may interfere with exercise performance. Glutamine is formed from Glutamic acid and AKG, so by combining L Glutamine with the Krebs Cycle Intermediary AKG we can increase cellular glutamine levels.

L Alanyl-L-Glutamine is a dipeptide of the two amino acids L- alanine and L-glutamine, L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine (Ala-Gln). Compared to L-glutamine (Gln),L Alanyl-L-Glutamine  improves viable cell growth, and increases cellular hydration preventing muscle break down after intense exercise. Furthermore,
Ala-GLn itself dramatically reduces the level of ammonia, which is a byproduct of L-Glutamine degradation. Ala-Gln is very soluble in water and stable in solution, therefore it can be utilized to deliver the benefits of glutamine in an easy to mix powder. While many amino acids can be converted into glucose, Alanine and Glutamine are the primary glycogenic amino acids(can be converted by the body into glucose to produce energy). Study 1. HIV patients gained average of 3kgs lean mass in 8 weeks with arginine / hmb / glutamine "Nutritional treatment for acquired immunodeficiency virus-associated wasting using beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate, glutamine, and arginine: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study."
RESULTS: Forty three subjects completed the 8-week protocol, (placebo, n = 21; HMB/Arg/Gln, n = 22). At 8 weeks, the subjects consuming the HMB/Arg/Gln mixture gained 3.0 +/- 0.5 kg of BW while those supplemented with the placebo gained 0.37 +/- 0.84 kg (p = .009). The BW gain in the HMB/Arg/Gln-treated subjects was predominantly LBM (2.55 +/- 0.75 kg) compared with the placebo-supplemented subjects who lost lean mass (-0.70 +/- 0.69 kg, p = .003). Study 2. Cancer patients losing up to 3lbs/month of lean mass gained an average of 1.2kg Fat Free Mass (over 2 lbs) in 4 weeks. Control group continued to lose muscle. "Reversal of cancer-related muscle wasting using oral supplementation with a combination of Hmb, arginine, and glutamine."
RESULTS: Thirty-two patients (14 control, 18 HMB/Arg/Gln) were evaluated at the 4-week visit. The patients supplemented with HMB/Arg/Gln gained 0.95 +/- 0.66 kg of body mass in 4 weeks, where as control subjects lost 0.26 +/- 0.78 kg during the same time period. This gain was the result of a significant increase in fat free mass in the HMB/Arg/Glutamine-supplemented group (1.12 +/- 0.68 kg), whereas the subjects supplemented with the control lost 1.34 +/- 0.78 kg of FFM (P = 0.02). Study 3. Creatine and beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) additively increased lean body mass and muscle strength during a weight-training program. RESULTS: In summary, CR and HMB can increase LBM and strength, and the effects are additive. Although not definitive, these results suggest that CR and HMB act by different mechanisms. Study 4. Beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate ingestion, Part I: Effects on strength and Fat Free Mass. RESULTS: Although the IRM strength gains were not significantly different, HMB supplementation appears to increase peak isometric and various isokinetic torque values, and increase fat free mass and decrease plasma CPK activity.
